AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, a candidate running to be the next governor of the state, visited the Rotary Club of Augusta on Monday.

Carr served as the guest speaker of a luncheon at the Rotary Club on Aug. 11, and addressed key issues in Georgia. The attorney general said the Peach State is leading the country in dealing with human trafficking, with over 250 victims rescued. There are offices in Augusta, Macon, and Atlanta, with plans in the works to open more. He said he believes focusing on treatment to lessen the number of overdose deaths in Georgia.

Carr also spoke briefly on his candidacy for Georgia governor.

“As we’ve truly built Georgia and made Georgia a model for the nation as it relates to economic development, but also keeping people safe. These are fundamental. And whether you’re a Republican, a Democrat or an independent, people want a job and they want to be safe,” Carr said. “So we’re going to continue to focus on that. We’re going to continue to focus on human trafficking, gang violence, organized retail theft. But also, we’ve got to focus on the mental health aspect of this and make sure that we get assistance, particularly for our sheriffs.”

Carr said he filed an ethics complaint and federal lawsuit against Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones in an effort to hold him accountable to abide by the rules that apply to all.
