
National Night Out, the annual police-involved event designed to build lasting relationships with the communities they serve, is just a few days away, and here's what you need to know about National Night Out 2025 in Pennsylvania.
When is National Night Out 2025?
National Night Out 2025 is Tuesday, Aug. 5.
More than 200 cities and towns across Pennsylvania traditionally partake in National Night Out events and festivities.
What is National Night Out?
National Night Out is designed to build bridges between communities and law enforcement and other first responders.
"Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much, much more," read the National Night Out website. "National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live."
Lower Merion, Pennsylvani native Matt Preskin created National Night Out in Philadelphia in 1984, years after he created the National Association of Town Watch.
"National Night Out was introduced in August of 1984 through an already established network of law enforcement agencies, neighborhood watch groups, civic groups, state and regional crime prevention associations and volunteers across the nation," read a portion of National Night Out's history. "National Night Out grew to become a celebration beyond just front porch vigils and symbolic efforts amongst neighbors to send a message of neighborhood camaraderie."
Pittsburgh and the Philadelphia Police Department are just two entities sponsoring several National Night Out events.
