SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Utah Fire Info is reminding the public to set up a risk-free environment when target shooting, in order to help prevent wildfires.
In 2025, Utah has had over 750 fires that have burned more than 156,000 acres and dry winds and high temperatures have led to hazardous conditions. As of August 1st, Utah is in a state of emergency due to the high fire risk. Utah Fire Info is urging the public to maintain common sense and be cautious to help prevent fire starts, especially when target shooting.
As part of their #FireSense campaign, Utah Fire Info says, “when you are out shooting, it’s important to look around and be mindful of your surroundings. Setting up a risk-free environment is key.”
They are also asking the public to consider the following tips when shooting outside:
Bring a shovel and water or fire extinguisher to put out a fire
Place shooting targets on dirt or gravel, away from grass
Consider shooting at an established outdoor or indoor range
Don’t shoot with steel core ammo
Don’t shoot trash, such as TVs or other appliances
Utah Fire Info also said that exploding targets, tracer ammo and incendiary ammo are illegal on public lands. Individuals should also be sure to use backstops that are free from dry vegetation and check for nearby trails and campsites for other people, before shooting.
Of the 750+ fires started in 2025, 538 were caused by humans.
