A Maybach For California Dreamers

As Monterey Car Week gets underway, Mercedes-Benz unveiled a special edition of its Maybach S 680 sedan inspired by California's Central Coast. The Edition Emerald Isle will be limited to 25 units for the United States market, and is scheduled to arrive at dealerships this fall.

As one of the few remaining V12 luxury sedans, the Maybach S 680 was already special. But the Edition Emerald Isle aims for even more distinction with a unique color palette and trim from Mercedes' Manufaktur personalization division.

The special edition wears a two-tone paint scheme consisting of Manufaktur Mid Ireland Green Metallic and Manufaktur Moonlight White Metallic to represent Monterey Cypress trees and the white sands of Pebble Beach, home of the Concours d'Elegance that anchors Monterey Car Week. Chrome exterior trim and 21-inch "champagne flute" forged wheels complete the look.

The interior combines light brown Nappa leather upholstery on the seats, dashboard, consoles, door panels, and steering wheel with a black Nappa leather headliner. Piano black trim with chrome pinstripes is included as well, along with floral designs on the door sills and "Edition Emerald Isle 1 of 25" badging.

Mercedes also found a way to incorporate the scents of California's Central Coast into the experience. Like other S-Class models, the Maybach S 680 has an Air Balance perfume spritzer. Mercedes commissioned a bespoke fragrance for the Edition Emerald Isle that, according to the press materials, "features cedar wood, cypress, and sea salt notes." It's hand-poured into bottles with artwork featuring the landmark Lone Cypress of Pebble Beach.

Like the standard Maybach S 680, the Edition Emerald Isle is powered by a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 producing 621 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. That decadent engine is connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Air suspension with adaptive damping is standard as well.

The Edition Emerald Isle also comes standard with the Executive Rear Seat Package Plus, which gives the sedan a four-seat layout with a large console between the rear seats housing a refrigerator and champagne flutes.

Additions like these help ensure wealthy customers will continue to think of the Maybach sub-brand in the same way as Rolls-Royce or Bentley, and shows off the Manufaktur division's ability to personalize cars to the same extent as those ultra-luxury brands.
