It’s not unusual for musicians to write songs about beloved cars, like Justin Bieber singing about his wife’s GMC Yukon. As part of his new album Swag, the song Yukon is an obvious love letter to his wife and child, yet some fans seem to believe it’s a reference to his roots in Canada.

BMW is cooking up a hardcore off-road machine.

The misunderstanding isn’t crazy considering there is the Yukon Territory up north. But Bieber grew up in Ontario not too far from the US border, not in the far more rugged and sparsely populated part of the country.

The first verse of the song is as follows:

In the city, 'member used to drive a Yukon
I pick up whenever you call
In the parking lot in Tucson like are you wit' me
In the phantom with the roof gone
I pull up like Jimmy Neutron
I could help you get a move on like U-Haul

The first line is a reference to 2018 when Justin and Hailey were moving towards marriage. At the time, the model was driving a GMC Yukon, hence the part about how she “used to drive a Yukon. That was well documented by the paparazzi at the time.

We’re not sure the song is entirely autobiographical. It makes reference to a “phantom with the roof gone.” The closest association we can come up with is a Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead.

But as far as we know, Bieber has only owned one Rolls-Royce, a Wraith that was customized in a wild way by West Coast Customs.

Then again, Bieber has a massive car collection, so it’s possible he had something like that back in the day.

The point is the song refers to Hailey’s GMC Yukon, not the Yukon Territory. After all, Prince sang about a little red Corvette, Travis Scott featured a notorious Bugatti Chiron in a music video, and Kendrick Lamar has featured his Buick GNX in his latest album.
