The search for the female black bear that mauled a woman earlier this month in northwest Wisconsin has ended.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) had been working with the Barron County Sheriff's Office and federal wildlife agents to capture and euthanize the sow (female bear) that attacked 69-year-old Karen Frye on July 12 outside her home near Comstock. The DNR announced on Monday that the search was unsuccessful but concluded.

Frye is recovering and "doing well," according to the DNR.

Authorities had been monitoring a series of live-traps and game cameras on Frye's property since the attack.

According to the department's large carnivore specialist, Randy Johnson, two female bears, two male bears and two young bears, none of which were involved in the attack, were trapped and released during the search.

"After two weeks of round-the-clock surveillance on the property and no additional signs of the sow involved, our current options are exhausted," he said in a statement.

The DNR plans to continue monitoring the area.
