1 killed, 6 hurt in Kansas City crash after driver flees from sergeant, police say

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One person died and six people were hurt in a crash early Thursday morning in northeast part of the city after a driver fled from a police sergeant, Kansas City police said.

The crash was reported just after midnight at Lexington and Wabash avenues.

According to a statement from Kansas City police, a police sergeant from KCPD’s East Patrol Division was in the area of Independence and Brooklyn avenues to check on a Hyundai Tucson that had been reported stolen.

Police said the driver of the Hyundai didn’t stop, and the sergeant stopped trying to pursue the SUV near Independence and Wabash avenues.

The Hyundai traveled north on Wabash Avenue, ran through a stop sign and struck a Jeep Grand Cherokee that had been heading west on Lexington Avenue.

One passenger in the Jeep was thrown from the vehicle as a result of the crash and later died from the injuries. The victim’s name has not been released.

The Jeep driver and three other passengers, including a juvenile, were taken to local hospitals with critical injuries.

The Hyundai driver and a passenger were taken to hospitals with serious injuries.

The crash remained under investigation Thursday.
