2 children killed after sailboat struck by barge in Florida

(NewsNation) — Two children were killed and four others were hurt after a barge struck a sailboat in Florida, according to CBS News.

U.S. Coast Guard Miami said they received a report from fire officials just before 11:35 a.m. about a collision between a sailboat and a barge near Hibiscus Island.

Six people, including five kids and one adult female counselor, made their way into the water after the impact, officials added. The boat sank after the crash.

Three of the victims were transported to the Miami-Dade Marina, while two were taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

Coast Guard officials said one person remained unresponsive at the scene.

The Miami Yacht Club confirmed that an incident occurred involving children of the Miami Youth Sailing Foundation. The six people were in their last week of the sailing camp for kids, according to the Miami Yacht Club.
