The Pinnacle of Three-Pointed Star Luxury

Mercedes-Maybach sits at the top of Mercedes-Benz's luxury offerings, known for extending comfort, craftsmanship, and exclusivity beyond the brand's standard range. In a segment where Bentley and Rolls-Royce often set the pricing benchmarks, Maybach has managed to occupy a space that offers comparable opulence at slightly less daunting figures. This positioning applies across its sedan and SUV range, and now, for the first time, to a two-seat roadster.

Revealed at Monterey Car Week last year, the 2026 Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series marks the sub-brand's entry into open-top grand touring with an AMG-developed foundation. At $224,900 before destination charges, it is the second most expensive model in the Mercedes lineup, but still relatively inexpensive compared to rivals.

The SL 680 Monogram Series

Based on the AMG SL platform, the SL 680 uses a handcrafted 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent via a 9-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels through the 4MATIC+ system, enabling an estimated 0-60 mph time of about 4 seconds.

AMG's Active Ride Control handles all suspension duties with hydraulic roll stabilization and rear-axle steering, tuned for a more refined driving experience than the AMG SL 63. Drive modes include Comfort, Maybach, Sport, and Individual, with a quieter exhaust system, acoustic roof, and additional sound insulation prioritizing a calm cabin.

Two main design themes are available: White Ambience pairs Obsidian Black Metallic with Manufaktur Moonlight White Magno, while Red Ambience combines Obsidian Black Metallic with Manufaktur Garnet Red Metallic. The exterior features an illuminated Maybach grille with an upright Mercedes star, chrome detailing, rose-gold accents, and 21-inch forged wheels, with a monoblock design option.

A PixelPaint hood pattern is available for an additional cost. Inside, Manufaktur Crystal White Exclusive Nappa leather with floral-inspired geometric stitching covers most surfaces, complemented by Maybach-specific digital display themes, stainless steel pedals, illuminated door sills, and a parcel shelf with an aero cowl in place of rear seats.

Not As Expensive As Expected, Especially When Compared to Rivals

Mercedes-Maybach positions the SL 680's price below direct rivals such as the Aston Martin DB12 Volante, Bentley Continental GT Convertible, and Ferrari Roma Spider, each of which starts around $270,000 before options. It also undercuts the last Maybach convertible, the limited-run S 650 Cabriolet, which began at $337,625. In the broader Maybach range, the SL 680 sits above the SUVs — the GLS 600 at $179,600 and EQS 680 SUV at $181,250 — and just below the V12-powered Maybach S-Class at $241,650.

While Mercedes has not confirmed production numbers, the model's niche positioning suggests exclusivity without being formally limited. In offering a blend of AMG performance, open-top motoring, and Maybach craftsmanship at a price below its most obvious competition, the SL 680 extends the sub-brand's value argument into an entirely new body style.
