Not So Fast: NASCAR Isn’t Banning Victory Lane Roof Climbs

Right after Connor Zilisch fell off his car’s roof on Victory Lane last weekend, people immediately assumed NASCAR would ban the practice. We admittedly thought that’s what was coming since there’s a past precedent. Then a wave of reports came that the organization had in fact officially banned the beloved tradition. But those seem to have been wildly inaccurate.

This impressive car collection from a NASCAR team owner is just sitting abandoned.

NASCAR itself just issued a press release dispelling the rumors that it won’t let victorious drivers climb up onto their cars to celebrate. While Zilisch broke his collarbone doing just that, it seems cooler heads have prevailed.

After all, freak accidents are a part of life. A lot of people die in the shower, but that doesn’t mean you stop bathing. Instead, you take precautions, then get on with life.

It seems that’s exactly what NASCAR is doing. Instead of telling drivers to get off their cars, officials will just be paying attention to what’s going on with the window net during celebrations.

That makes sense. After all, it was the net that caused Zilisch to slip and fall.

“I think that was part of the problem that the window net was flapping on the outside,” NASCAR managing director of communications Mike Forde said during the latest episode of the “Hauler Talk” podcast.

“I think Connor even said that may have been a problem, and one of our safety guys actually mentioned the same thing. So, we may do just sort of a check to make sure that if that’s inside the car, it’s one less thing you can slip on.”

In other words, NASCAR is being downright reasonable. Honestly, we’re shocked. After all, back in 2001 the organization tried using “The Gate” to keep drivers from climbing onto their roof, something which only worked for a few races.

We were fearful “The Gate” or something worse was about to be unveiled. Instead, officials will be keeping their eyes on window nets. We can live with that.
