WEST VIRGINIA (WBOY) — As students begin school in West Virginia over the next few weeks, House Bill 2003 is now taking effect, which limits the use of personal electronic devices in the classroom.

On top of the limitations, the law also expects county boards of education to develop their own policies that decide whether or not devices are allowed on school property and where the devices are to be stored.

Students in elementary, middle and high schools across West Virginia are required to follow the new policy. Per the bill, exemptions to the policy can be made for students with Individual Education Plans, a 504 plan, medical orders or other written accommodations.

Each school board is also required to outline the penalties for students who violate the policy, as well as outline the protocol for parents to communicate with their students during the school day.

Keep up with your county’s board of education website and social media to know the policies in place for personal device usage.
