Dramatic cellphone video shows the moment a California Highway Patrol officer PITs out a fleeing Dodge Charger. We know a lot of people think almost all police PITs are done in Arkansas, Georgia, and Florida, but believe it or not they do occasionally happen in the Golden State.
Watch Georgia cops PIT out a fleeing four wheeler.
The red Dodge Charger Daytona was recorded by several drivers and OnScene TV running from police after Los Angeles Police Department initiated a pursuit. What started the chase was a report of the Mopar muscle car being stolen.
Whoever was driving definitely had the attitude of driving it like it was stolen, because it reportedly was. At one point, the video footage shows the Charger weave through slower traffic on the highway, almost fishtailing as the suspect accelerates while making the aggressive moves.
But as the Dodge sped down a surface street, one CHP unit gained on it rapidly while going Code 3, catching the rear driver-side quarter panel with its push bar in one fluid motion.
The move was so subtle, we wonder if the suspect driver even knew it was a PIT maneuver until the vehicle started spinning counterclockwise. Ultimately, the Charger hit a pole and wall, disabling it and bringing the high-speed chase, which ranged across the Los Angeles area, to a sudden halt.
While CHP doesn’t PIT out suspects like Arkansas State Police or Georgia State Patrol does, flipping suspect cars at over 100 mph and such, the agency does do tactical maneuvers when suspects flee. At least it does some of the time.
As you can see in the footage, CHP officers seem to be well-trained. Or at least that particular one pulled off a silky smooth PIT that worked exactly as intended.
The suspects were taken into custody and the Mopar was recovered, although it’s more than a little banged up.
