Explore Mississippi’s top nature spots for relaxation

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Life can get stressful now and again. A mental health organization based in California, A Mission for Michael, took a survey of people living in all 50 states and asked them their favorite nature areas in their state, where they get away and destress.

The top of the list for Mississippi is down on the Gulf Coast at Moss Point – The Pascagoula River Audubon Center. It is located where the Pascagoula River fans out into marshes and swamps as it flows into the Gulf. The headquarters building is a wood structure that lends itself to the natural setting in which it sits.

There are nature trails and places where you can sit in solitude and enjoy the Pascagoula River. You know, there are people who say this river used to sing. I don’t think it does it anymore. But maybe, just maybe it will hum you a few bars if you are still and quiet long enough.

Second on Mississippian’s favorite nature healing areas is the Clark Creek Natural Area, located southwest of Woodville. Clark Creek is a series of at least seven full-time waterfalls. The brochure says as many as 50 waterfalls of various sizes can be found there. They are on a very rustic walking trail that drops you from the parking lot down into a deep ravine where a meandering creek takes the leap over sandstone ledges now and again and plunges as much as 50 feet in some places. Clark Creek is owned by the state. There is a nominal fee to hike.

The third is Tishomingo State Park. Bear Creek is here, so is the swinging walkway bridge across the creek to the most impressing rock outcroppings in Mississippi I’ve ever found. I was there one time when an Explorer Scout troop from Memphis came to get their rock-climbing merit badges.

Climb if you want to, but I kind of enjoy the old cabins with their screen porches and wood fire places.
