A historic, old-fashioned general store near the Texas-Louisiana border is one of the best places for a pit stop in the southern part of the country.
Jefferson General Store, located in Jefferson, Texas, made WorldAtlas' list of 5 old-timey general stores, along with other historic spots in the South, ranging from East Texas to Florida and the mountainside communities of the Appalachians.
Jefferson General Store has served East Texas as a hardware store and a general store since the 1870s, according to its website.
Flash forward to today, the store offers 5-cent coffee, soda fountain, handmade pecan pralines, Blue Bell ice cream, old-time candy, Texas jams, old-time toys, t-shirts, books, greeting cards, antiques, and more.
Here's why the store made WorldAtlas' list:
"Its (Jefferson General Store) early role was tied directly to the local riverport economy, outfitting traders, settlers, and locals with tools, dry goods, and household staples needed on America's frontier," according to WorldAtlas. "The current iteration has preserved many of those original features, including its original wood floors, high tin ceilings, and a working safe that predates modern banking in the region."
