The suspect in a fatal South Jersey shooting has been apprehended in Virginia, authorities said on Tuesday.
James H. McDowell Jr., 33, of Beverly in Burlington County, was taken into custody in Roanoke, Virginia, on Friday, the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement. He is charged with first-degree murder and several second-degree weapons offenses.
The shooting happened on the morning of June 8 at the corner of Earl and Clarkson streets in Burlington City. Officers responding to the scene found 38-year-old Derrick Adams, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said.
Adams, a Burlington City resident, was pronounced dead on the scene, officials said. The shooter had fled the area before police arrived.
The U.S. Marshals Service and multiple local police departments in New Jersey and Virginia assisted with the investigation leading to McDowell’s arrest. Prosecutors did not say how McDowell was identified as the suspect.
McDowell is in custody at the Roanoke City Adult Detention Center as he awaits extradition to New Jersey.
