The suspect in an armed standoff on July 29 near the University of Florida campus has been shot and killed by deputies with the Alachua County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's Capt. Chris Simms reported via social media that law enforcement was attempting to serve a felony narcotics warrant at an apartment complex in the 100 block of Northwest Ninth Terrace when the male suspect fired a single round toward officers.

The apartment building was then evacuated and the suspect contained. No law enforcement officers or members of the public were injured.

The sheriff's office's SWAT and hostage negotiation teams were at the scene, as well as the bomb squad, Gainesville Police Department and the Alachua County Fire Rescue Drone Team.

The sheriff's office later reported on social media that the suspect fired additional shots at members of the SWAT team and was subsequently shot and killed by deputies.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be called to investigate the shooting, as is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings.

West University Avenue between West Eighth Street and West 11th Street is expected to be closed for an "extended period of time." The public is advised to avoid the area.
