A motive has been announced for the gunman who took four lives in a New York City shooting on Monday evening.

A man, carrying a long rifle, went into a New York City skyscraper on Monday evening, shortly after 6 p.m. E.T. The man, who has since been identified as former high school football player Shane Tamura, killed four people at 345 Park Avenue, before taking his own life.

The New York City skyscraper is one of the most popular office buildings in the city. It's home to several notable organizations, including the National Football League. Many had speculated that the shooter could have been motivated by something football-related.

Now, a day after the shooting, we reportedly know what his intentions were.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced on Monday that they believe the man was targeting the National Football League.

A note was recovered following the shooting. It talked about CTE, the brain disease commonly associated with head trauma suffered due to football hits.

The shooter was a high school football player, but he never played above that level.

"He did have a note on him. The note alluded to that he felt he had CTE, a known brain injury for those who participate in contact sports. He appeared to have blamed the NFL for his injury," the mayor said on "CBS Mornings" on Tuesday morning.

The shooter was from Las Vegas, though he drove across the country to New York City over the weekend and into Monday evening. He apparently took the wrong elevator bank and ended up on the 33rd floor at 345 Park.

"From our preliminary investigation, he took the wrong elevator bank up to the NFL headquarters. Instead, it took him to Rudin Management, and that is where he carried out additional shootings and took the lives of additional employees," the mayor said.

He ended up killing a total of four people, including NYPD Officer Didarul Islam.

An employee at the financial firm Blackstone was also killed. The office building is home to firms like Blackstone, KPMG, the NFL and others.

"She was brilliant, passionate, warm, generous, and deeply respected within our firm and beyond. She embodied the best of Blackstone. Our prayers are with her husband, children and family. We are also saddened by the loss of the other innocent victims as well, including brave security personnel and NYPD," the company said in a statement.

Our thoughts continue to be with the friends and family members of everyone involved.
