Suspect arrested, charged in teen’s murder in Madison, Illinois

MADISON, Ill. – A suspect is now behind bars and facing criminal charges in connection with the shooting death of a teenager over the weekend in Madison, Illinois.

The Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged Rayontae M. Pearson, 22, with two counts of first-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm in connection with the case.

The victim, a 16-year-old boy, was shot and killed on Saturday afternoon near the intersection of Washington and Wayne Lanter avenues. The victim’s identity has not been disclosed as of Tuesday, nor have details on any potential motives.

The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis announced the arrest on Tuesday, noting it stemmed from an arrest warrant after 58 leads over the last three days.

“I want to commend Chief Jeff Bridick and the dedicated officers of the Madison Police Department for their quick response and outstanding collaboration with the Major Case Squad in this investigation,” said Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Haine via a news release. “I also commend Wood River Police Sgt. Brent Rombach, who is serving as the Major Case Squad Deputy Commander for this investigation, along with the investigators who are working under his direction. The professionalism and urgency of the officers and the investigators resulted in these charges. This investigation again demonstrated the strength of regional collaboration among law enforcement agencies.”

“This arrest once again highlights the dedication, professionalism, and coordination among our investigators,” said Sergeant Justin Biggs, Illinois Chief Deputy Commander for the Major Case Squad. “We are proud of the outcome of this case and remain committed to pursuing justice for victims and their families.”

Pearson is now jailed with a pending detention hearing.
