GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) — Steven Bixby, an inmate on South Carolina’s death row, is set to have a competency hearing in Greenville to determine if he can be executed.

Bixby was sentenced to death for the murders of two law enforcement officers in Abbeville County at his home in 2003. His execution, initially set for May, was halted by the South Carolina Supreme Court.

Bixby’s attorneys argue that he is mentally unstable and unable to understand the evidence against him.

The South Carolina Supreme Court has deferred the decision on Bixby’s competency to a circuit judge, who will conduct the hearing. The outcome of the competency hearing will determine whether Bixby’s execution can proceed, with significant implications for his case.

Officials said the hearing is expected to last two days.
