Most of Minnesota to experience 'unhealthy' air through Saturday originally appeared on Bring Me The News.
Winds are carrying heavy wildfire smoke into Minnesota, with unhealthy air quality conditions expected to linger through Saturday afternoon.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency on Tuesday expanded its air quality alert to include all of Minnesota, with most of the state in the red-level, "unhealthy" category.
The alert took effect at 1 p.m. Tuesday and currently runs until 5 p.m. Saturday.
Northerly winds are carrying the smoke from wildfires across Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Canada into Minnesota.
"The smoke will be reinforced by an area of high pressure that will create light winds and limit the dispersion of smoke," the MPCA said.
Fine particle levels are expected to reach the red air quality index category, which is considered unhealthy for everyone.
Minnesotans are encouraged to limited prolonged or heavy exertion and time spent outdoors until air quality improves.
The National Weather Service Twin Cities is also advising Minnesotans to keep windows closed at night, even as cool evening temperatures move in.
According to the NWS, smoke usually settles to the ground and will enter homes if windows are left open.
