Rudy Fugle, crew chief for NASCAR Cup Series regular season champion William Byron, was ejected from Daytona International Speedway after the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet failed inspection.
After passing inspection Friday on its second attempt, the crew was observed making an unapproved adjustment to the car’s splitter. The struts were reinstalled, and the car moved over the underbody scanning station again. It failed due to the adjustment. It was after this failure that Fugle was ejected.
In addition to Fugle’s removal from the property, the team lost pit selection. It will start Saturday night’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 from the rear of the field. Byron also must execute a stop-and-go penalty after the race receives the green flag.
Brandon McSwain will be Byron’s crew chief for the regular season finale at the 2.5-mile track.
