College students at Texas Tech, Lubbock Christian University and South Plains College are settling in to their new digs while Lubbockites are getting used to a busier city as summer winds down.

Monday marks the first day of fall classes for most area universities, with thousands of students having moved into residence halls, apartments and other dwellings around Lubbock, Levelland and Plainview.

Texas Tech phased its residence hall move-in over the last week and a half, welcoming thousands of students back to live on a campus that's served as the hub for more than 40,000 students in recent years. Lubbock Christian University opened its campus to a record-setting group of first-year students on Thursday, Aug. 21, greeting them with LCU's traditional move-in assistance and celebration. Plainview's return to college life started earlier this month when Wayland Baptist Univeristy classes started Aug. 11.

LCU welcomes record freshman class

LCU faculty, staff, alumni, and returning students joined together in assisting first-year students as they moved into residence halls, creating an encouraging and celebratory start to the college experience, according to a news release from LCU.

The day was marked by a spirit of service, joy, and connection that has become a hallmark of LCU’s culture.

LCU President Scott McDowell was among those helping students unload and settle in, offering a personal welcome as the university family grows.

“Move-in day is special because of all the promise and potential that comes in moments like these,” McDowell said. “For many, and perhaps most of these students, this day marks a significant milestone in the journey that will literally transform their future.”

The day kicks off a weekend of orientation activities designed to help students transition into college life, make connections, and explore the mission and values that shape the LCU experience.

Excitement is building across campus, fueled by the positive momentum of the new academic year. While official numbers won’t be available until the 12th day of classes, this group of new students of well over 400 eclipses previous numbers. Campus life is thriving as all residence halls are very near maximum capacity, including the newest housing addition to campus, Gullo Hall, entering its second year of occupancy.

“Today, we welcome the largest freshmen class in the history of Lubbock Christian University and for the second straight year we welcome a record number of students living on campus," McDowell said. "We are currently at 99% of capacity in our residence halls and excited about the experience these students will have and the energy that they bring to all of us as we watch the LCU mission come to life in them.”
