PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A powerful earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday prompted a tsunami advisory for most of the continental West Coast of the United States, including Oregon and Washington’s coasts, where officials are warning people to stay off the shores.
An 8.7 magnitude earthquake has resulted in tsunami warnings for parts of Alaska and the state of Hawaii.

A tsunami warning went in effect around 8:30 p.m. PT for the Pacific Coast from Cape Mendocino, California to the Oregon/California border.
The tsunami advisory continues for the Oregon coast, the Washington coast and the coast of British Columbia.
Officials with Oregon Emergency Management told KOIN 6 News they expect the waves to hit around midnight but should be no more than 2-3 feet.
However, that doesn’t mean danger isn’t lurking elsewhere. OEM said the waves could be small but they’re still tsunami waves and the ocean is unpredictable.
National Weather Service says potential landfalls for the U.S.’ Pacific Northwest coasts are as follows:
Port Orford, Oregon – 11:35 p.m. PST (estimated 1-1.8 feet)
La Push, Washington – 11:35 p.m. PST
Neah Bay, Washington – 11:40 p.m. PST (estimated to be less than a foot)
Charleston, Oregon – 11:45 p.m. PST (estimated to be less than a foot)
Long Beach, Washington – 11:45 p.m. PST (estimated to be less than a foot)
Brookings, Oregon – 11:50 p.m. PST (estimated to be .8-1.5 feet)
Westport, Washington – 11:50 p.m. PST (estimated to be less than a foot)
Moclips, Washington – 11:50 p.m. PST (estimated to be between .7-1.3 feet)
Seaside, Oregon – 11:55 p.m. PST
Newport, Oregon – 11: 55 p.m. PST

The Oregon Department of Emergency Management says with advisories, coastal regions will see strong currents and waves that may be dangerous to those in and very near the water. People are being advised to stay out of the water and away from beaches and waterways.
