
A massive earthquake off the coast of Kamchatka, Russia has triggered a series of tsunami alerts for Hawaii, Alaska, and the U.S. West coast. The earthquake was measured at an 8.7 on the Richter scale according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was shallow, striking at around 11 miles deep. If verified, this would be the strongest earthquake anywhere on Earth since 2011.
All warnings issued by the U.S. government are available on NOAA's tsunami warning system website.

Hawaii's alert has also been upgraded to a tsunami warning, with waves expected to reach the island around 7:15 p.m. local time.
Meanwhile, the U.S. West coast, including California, Oregon, and Washington state, has been upgraded to a tsunami advisory, after earlier being under the lower tsunami watch category.
