Oh, those crafty Kia people. They know build an SUV to be adored.

There’s a truth in reviewing cars: Car makers only want critics to drive their top-of-the-line models so their reviews will convince buyers to buy the best one they offer. That is the case, you might think, with the 2026 Kia Sportage SX-Prestige hybrid AWD.

But there’s some validity to this idea; you should always get the most car for the money you have to spend, right? And, that’s how car makers design their cars, accommodating top features then removing or replacing them to reduce the price in lower trim models.

Usually. But not in Kia-land.

This story is 100% human-researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience, and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks. Additionally, I was Kia’s guest for this test drive, but all opinions are my own.

The Most Popular Trim of the Most Popular Car Kia Sells? Prestige

Turns out, the more-for-the-money thinking has worked well for Kia. About half of the Sportage SUVs sold—Sportage is Kia’s most popular model—are SX Prestige and X-Pro Prestige models.

When you start to look at what you get for the price in the hybrid Kia Sportage SX Prestige versus the entry-level models, you start to feel the want: Leatherette seats, a panoramic sunroof, heads-up display. Add to that the heated and vented front seats, heated rear seats, a smart power lift gate (just stand behind it with key in hand and it opens), a surround view camera, blind spot camera, 19” wheels (in a very posh basket weave design), a phone-based digital key and premium Harman Kardon sound, and it’s a nice assembly of features.

That’s in addition to the standard wide multimedia screen with a 12” driver display and 12” media display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android auto, and now—this is one of my favorite features—“Hey Kia” voice assistance, all of which are standard on all models.

Kia Sportage’s Pricing Makes the Top Trim More Appealing

But it’s how the company has priced the hybrid versus the gas-powered model that really puts the poshest version over the top: All hybrid models except the base model come equipped with all-wheel drive, an $1,800 addition that is available on most gas-powered models and standard on two of them.

By combining AWD and hybrid, you’ll save about $300 over optioning each upgrade separately, and you’ll get more power: The gas-powered model delivers 187 HP, but the hybrid delivers 232 HP, a marked difference, especially when passing on the highway or loading the car up with people and stuff. You’ll notice it on a road trip with the family.

That, combined with the fuel economy savings, makes the slightly pricier hybrid seem like a no-brainer.

How the Kia Sportage Lineup Shakes Out

For those who don’t want hybrid or AWD, and I get you, you know what you want and need; there are 6 gas models to choose from starting at $28,690. To keep the price low, they come with cloth upholstery and skip all the upgrades, but do include the multimedia system and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Hybrid buyers have 5 models to choose from, starting at $30,290 and topping out at $40,390. Plug-in hybrid models will be introduced later this year and are expected to be comprised of higher trims and priced from $40,000 to about $47,000.

This is Huge: The Addition of “Hey Kia” and Wireless Apple CarPlay

Probably the biggest news of the 2026 model year is the upgrade in technology that adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This is big for a few reasons. First, there is no glory better than hopping into your car and having Apple CarPlay instantly show up on the media system. It’s been a miss for Kia for a while to not have this.

Not being one to miss out on much for too long, Kia also included Apple Maps navigation on the heads-up display (in models that have it, and not all do); if you’re using Apple Maps and have a trim with HUD, you’ll see turn-by-turn directions in the display. Kia says this works with Android Auto and Google Maps, but when I used Google Maps on my iPhone, I didn’t see it displayed on the HUD.

But, it gets better: the multimedia system has been updated to include “Hey Kia” voice assistance, and it can do homework. The system is cloud-connected and can answer questions. I asked it to name the capital of Argentina, and it did, correctly (Buenos Aires). It can also change the radio station, set navigation, and change the climate settings.

A New Design Brings the Sportage In Line With Other Popular Kia Models

Kia’s design journey took off with the Kia Telluride but really hit its stride with the Kia EV9: stacked headlights, “Star Map” daytime running lights, angular, boxier designs that are easily and believably modified for off-roading, and a wide glossy front grille.

The rear end is notable for Star Map tail lights and a simplified rear end look that includes a windshield wiper that’s tucked up under the rear spoiler for a clean look.

For 2026, Kia went with a very novel wheel design, a sort of ‘basket weave’ that is posh and unusual; currently, you’ll see a similar design on the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, but my guess is we’ll see more of this design on other cars in the coming days.

Interior Design Is Smart and Chic, Too

Inside, there are several choices of interior colors, though some are dependent on the trim chosen. Our test model was finished in light gray (one of my favorite interior colors in any car) leatherette with microsuede details, giving the seats a posh feeling. The cabin is framed in machined metal and ambient lighting, which both work to create a more sophisticated feel in this budget-friendly SUV.

One of the best features is the flat top and bottom steering wheel. It feels great in your hands and provides better visibility of the road.

But the real win? The headrests that can hold a purse, tote, backpack, or a phone or tablet. Plus, there are bag hooks and, in upper trims, USB ports on the seat backs. These seats are a huge, huge win.

What It’s Like Behind the Wheel of the 2026 Kia Sportage

The Kia Sportage hybrid that we drove didn’t deliver any rude surprises: it started up silently, accelerated nicely, and in sport mode, the steering, acceleration, and handling tightened up a bit for a sportier feeling.

All models offer sport, eco, and custom drive modes accessible via a button on the steering wheel. Buyers of hybrid models will find a dial gear selector (versus a lever gear shifter in their gas-powered models) that lights up with the color of the drive mode that’s active: It’s surrounded by a blue light for eco, a red light for sport, and a purple light for custom mode.

AWD models also add terrain mode—snow, mud, and sand—for light off-roading, uneven terrain, or challenging weather conditions.

Driving the Kia Sportage hybrid is easy and natural thanks to its confident handling and the ample power provided by the 4-cylinder turbo engine assisted by the hybrid battery power system.

Here are some key things to consider:

  • Kia Sportage’s better features are in the more expensive top trims

  • The most fuel-efficient FWD hybrid is only available in the base model and is estimated to get about 42 MPG

  • AWD hybrid models are estimated to get about 35 MPG, though we averaged about 30 MPG on our test drive

  • Gas-powered models are estimated to average about 29 MPG

  • The gas-powered models have more towing capacity, at 2,500 lbs., than the hybrid, which can tow up to 2,000 lbs.

  • Plug-in hybrid electric fans will have to wait until those models arrive later in 2025

  • AWD adds all-terrain modes

  • Hybrid models have a few more luxe goodies, like HUD and rear heated seats, that the gas-powered models don’t have

Here’s how the Kia Sportage trims break down:

  • The gas-powered model (see all trim details here), powered by an in-line 4 cylinder that generates 187 HP, comes equipped with smart adaptive cruise control, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the upgraded multimedia system with 12” driver and media displays, 17” wheels, and starts at $28,690

  • The gas-powered SX-Prestige model adds 19” wheels, rain-sensing wipers, a panoramic sunroof, a smart liftgate, a surround-view camera system, and premium sound, and is priced at $36,290

  • The X-Pro Prestige adds AWD, all-terrain tires, a heated windshield, and higher ground clearance and is priced at $39,590

  • The hybrid base model (see all hybrid features here) has front-wheel drive and is powered by a 4-cylinder turbo that delivers 232 HP; it has a cloth interior and starts at $30,290

  • The SX Prestige hybrid adds heads-up display, heated front and rear seats, vented front seats, blind spot view monitor, and more premium features, and starts at $40,390

  • Our test model with all weather mats and $1,395 delivery was priced at $41,985.

Even With All the Goodies, the 2026 Kia Sportage Is Still a Great Value

The average price of a new car these days is pushing $49,000. To find luxe details like an expansive media screen, wireless Apple CarPlay, and adaptive cruise takes a bit away from the pain of the price tag. Moving up to hybrid fuel economy softens the blow a bit more, as does all-wheel drive (especially if you need it).

But moving up to the most premium features only nudges the price up a bit: with 20% down, the payment on the SX Prestige is $634 for 60 months versus $433 for the base model gas-powered version. That’s $200 a month for more comfortable heated and vented leatherette seats, heads-up display, a panoramic sunroof, and more power underfoot. That’s a pretty crafty assemblage of luxe features, making it easy to see why so many buyers say yes to the top-of-the-line Kia Sportage and why that trend is likely to continue.
