This Week in Pennsylvania
The roster of leaders endorsing Garrity includes State Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward, Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman, and House Republican Leader Jesse Topper.
“Next year’s race for governor could not have higher stakes for Pennsylvania,” said Ward (R-Westmoreland). “We need a governor who will fight for taxpayers, grow our economy, and serve the people instead of themselves. Stacy Garrity has proven that she can be that governor.”

“I’m incredibly honored to have the support of Republican leaders in the Pennsylvania General Assembly,” said Garrity. “Their endorsement means a great deal, and I’m grateful for their confidence in my record and vision for our Commonwealth.”
The endorsement of Garrity by state lawmakers comes as one of their colleagues, State Senator Doug Mastriano, considers a second run for governor.
Mastriano, who lost the 2022 gubernatorial race to Josh Shapiro, has been critical of state Republican leaders who, in his view, are attempting to coronate Garrity as the party’s nominee eight months before votes can be cast.
“The issue I have here is that we want the state party out of the way and let the people decide,” Mastriano said the morning Garrity launched her campaign.
Mastriano has said he’s still considering whether to run, but said a party endorsement will not affect his timeline.

In an interview with abc27’s Dennis Owens last week, Garrity said she sees “an incredible opportunity to turn the state around.”
“And if you just look at the independent fiscal office’s numbers, we would be totally out of the surplus, plus the rainy day fund, in two years,” said Garrity. “Pennsylvania has the fifth-largest tax burden, and so what would happen after we’re out of money?”
The winner of next spring’s primary will face incumbent Governor Josh Shapiro (D), who will likely bring significant fundraising behind him. Many consider Shapiro to be a top candidate in the 2028 presidential race as a popular swing state governor.
“Well, this isn’t personal,” Garrity said when asked about Shapiro. “I just have a totally different vision for what our Commonwealth could be.”
When asked about Garrity entering the race, Shapiro said last week, “[Republicans] are going to have their intramural fight, they’ll send someone along to face me next year, we’ll be ready.”
