Kilmar Abrego Garcia is back in ICE custody.

The Maryland father — whom the Trump administration wrongly deported to the notorious CECOT prison in El Salvador — was detained again on Monday, per his lawyer. Abrego Garcia was released from a Tennessee jail Friday and was headed back to see his family in Maryland as he awaited trial. But he was arrested again Monday when he arrived at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Baltimore, per his lawyer, Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, who claimed his client went to the office for an interview.

Sandoval-Moshenberg said the administration indicated it wanted to deport him to Uganda, accusing the White House of trying to “coerce” a guilty plea on trumped-up charges of human smuggling. The lawyer said the administration gave Abrego Garcia an ultimatum: Plead guilty to the charges and be sent to Costa Rica as a refugee, or be deported to Uganda.

The re-arrest is the latest chapter in Abrego Garcia’s longstanding legal saga. The Trump administration — which claimed it had no power to bring Abrego Garcia back from El Salvador before it ended up doing it anyway — has seemingly made his case a priority, making him into a symbol of its illegal immigration crackdown.

Abrego Garcia is a Salvadoran citizen who came to the U.S. illegally in 2011. ICE found him in 2019 and, though he was denied asylum, he was given a deportation protection order after a judge determined he would be harmed by Salvadoran gangs. In March, the Trump administration mistakenly deported Abrego Garcia after space on a deportation plane became available. The administration acknowledged it was an “administrative error,” although it continues to claim without evidence that he is an MS-13 gang member who engaged in human trafficking.
