There are plenty of theories being thrown around about what’s going on with Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari this season. After all, there’s no doubt the man knows how to race – just look at his record. But he’s failed to get one podium finish at a Grand Prix this season.
Bubba Wallace plays the victim after causing a big crash at Daytona.
One person who has more knowledge than most about the innerworkings at Ferrari has thrown out his own rather interesting theory about what might actually be going wrong behind the scenes. He might be on to something compelling.
That person is Juan Pablo Montoya, former Scuderia Ferrari driver, who went on the MontoyoAS podcast recently and explained what the thinks is happening with Hamilton. He thinks it’s similar to what Carlos Sainz Jr. experienced in his first season on the team, which was ugly.
Montoya said both the driver and team need to exercise patience as they get used to each other. That is especially true when it comes to the engineers believing the SF-25 has to be driven a specific way.
“Hamilton has been driving a certain way for many years, and it works,” Montoya said.
“The problem is that many engineers are saying, ‘No, this car needs to be driven differently, this car needs something else.’
“But that car isn’t exactly good either.”
In other words, there’s a butting of heads as Hamilton wants the car tweaked certain ways to better suit his driving style and Ferrari engineers argue that he as the driver needs to change his style to suit the racecar better.
This actually squares with other reports we’ve covered about what’s going on between the seven time champion and the powers at Maranello.
But who’s right, Hamilton or the engineers? Does it even matter? And will they finally get on the same page? That definitely remains to be seen, but Montoya seems to believe things will settle down and all the parties will get accustomed to each other soon.
