Trump approval locked at 40 percent, down from start of second term: Gallup

President Trump’s approval rating is locked in at about 40 percent after starting out his term somewhat higher, a new Gallup poll found.

The poll released Tuesday showed Trump’s approval back at the 40 percent mark, up 3 points from where it stood last month and the same as where he was the month before.

He had received at least 43 percent approval or higher from the start of his return to office through May in Gallup polling, though he never reached 50 percent.

Americans’ approval of his handling of foreign policy reached a new low for his second term with 39 percent, while support for his handling of the economy stayed at the low of 37 percent.

Gallup noted in its analysis that neither of these figures changed meaningfully from last month but are both 5 points down from their high point in January.

Trump’s current numbers are roughly in line with the average that Gallup found from across Trump’s first term. But the one exception is support for his handling of the economy, which currently is 15 points lower than his first-term average of 52 percent.

The partisan divide in views of the president’s job performance tied the highest mark that Gallup has ever recorded with a 92-point difference, first measured in October 2020. Pollsters found 93 percent of Republicans approve of Trump’s job performance, while just 1 percent of Democrats said the same.

The 1 percent total for Democrats is the same as the percentage who said they approved of Trump in June and similar to the 2 percent who backed Trump in June 2020 and 3 percent who backed former President George W. Bush amid the 2008 financial crisis. It’s also similar to the 2 percent of Republicans who said they approved of former President Biden at times during 2023 and 2024.

Trump’s approval rating among independents is not nearly as low as with Democrats but is still poor, with just 35 percent saying they approve of his job performance. A third said they approve of his handling of foreign affairs, and 29 percent said they approve of his handling of the economy.

While Republicans remain overwhelmingly in favor of Trump’s handling of the economy, this is the issue that has seemed to most contribute to his drop in approval and why he’s failed to surpass 40 percent overall in recent months.

The percentage of Americans who believe the economy is “poor” reached 38 percent, up 7 points from June and in line with when Biden left office. The percentage who say the economy is getting worse reached 63 percent, a few points up from June.

Gallup indicated the poor views of the economy could be a result of continued high prices despite positive news about the stock market and second quarter gross domestic product growth.

It said his approval rating overall and on the economy is more in line with the connection between the two data points historically than Trump’s first term, when Trump often had a majority backing him on the economy but with an approval rating in the low 40s.

The poll was conducted Aug. 1-20 among 1,094 U.S. adults. The margin of error was 4 percentage points.
