Even though it may have lost its manual transmission, the latest Volkswagen Golf R still has plenty of strengths. That car may not actually be the ultimate version of the current Golf, though. According to a new report from Autocar, an upcoming variant of the high-output Golf could get one very big strength, very soon.
According to Autocar, a special Golf R model celebrating the car's 25th anniversary could get the five-cylinder engine from the current Audi RS3. That would almost certainly mean a major bump in horsepower, too. The Golf R's EA888 four-cylinder currently produces 328 hp. Audi's current RS3, by contrast, reaches over 400 hp.

In addition to the power boost, the five-cylinder from Audi is also simply a more unusual engine than the four-cylinder in the standard Golf R. It is the only five-cylinder engine still in production at any major manufacturer The sound it makes is completely unique among modern cars, a major contrast to the relatively generic tones of the often-used EA888 currently in the Golf R.
The report also suggests that the RS3's torque splitter would come along with its engine. That mechanical torque vectoring unit can shift power headed to the rear wheels entirely to one wheel or the other, giving the car's control systems a significant degree of adaptability.
Autocar says that the car would arrive in 2027, complete with unique styling touches to commemorate the car's 25th anniversary. If the product ends up coming to fruition, it may prove to be one of the most interesting hot hatches ever built.
