Texas Attorney General candidate Aaron Reitz secured a key endorsement Monday from Attorney General Ken Paxton, reshaping one of the most closely watched races in Texas politics.
Congressman Chip Roy, who represents Texas’ 21st Congressional District, also recently entered the attorney general race. He announced his campaign on Thursday and quickly secured the endorsement of U.S. Senator Ted Cruz.
Reitz has close ties to both Paxton and Trump. He served as first assistant attorney general under Paxton from 2020 to 2023. Afterward, he became Cruz’s chief of staff before Trump appointed him to the Department of Justice. Reitz’s campaign website highlights Trump’s praise of him as a “true MAGA attorney.”
In his endorsement video, Paxton described Reitz as the best candidate to continue his legacy.
“This is a super important position; it matters to me. We have an opportunity in this position to change the country, to fight for the country, to fight for Texans. And I know and totally believe in Aaron Reitz, and I know he will be the greatest attorney general the state of Texas has ever seen,” Paxton said.
Following Paxton’s remarks, Reitz responded: “I’m proud to be standing with my friend, mentor, and Texas champion, Ken Paxton, proud to have his endorsement today.”
Looking ahead, Reitz vowed to continue the “major fights” Paxton led for Texas and the nation.
On social media, Texans reacted to the announcement.
“Two battle-tested warriors for freedom and liberty! @KenPaxtonTX & @aaron_reitz are TRUE PATRIOTS, ready to take on all the Chip Soy Kevin McCarthy John Cornyn lobbyists out there, and their special interests donors! LET’S GOOOO!!!” Tom Slocum posted on X.
“We are going to have a Reitz v Roy runoff. Massive endorsement,” Texas attorney Adam Loewy wrote on X.
