Sloppy Tow Truck Drops Pickup And Keeps Going

We’ve seen some bad tow truck operators in our day, but this guy who lost the pickup he was transporting takes the cake. Surveillance footage from people who live in the Southern California neighborhood where this incident unfolded shows exactly what happened, and it’s unbelievable.

Learn about the Dodge Challenger left in a Midwest cornfield.

At the beginning of the video, which was shared by KTLA 5, the flat bed tow truck comes speeding around a corner in a Sherman Oaks neighborhood. That’s not a great move to make in a tow truck, or really any truck, but it’s even worse because the vehicle it’s towing wasn’t secured.

You can see the gray Ford Super Duty on the back isn’t strapped down. The pickup’s rear wheel slides off the side of the wrecker, the shift in weight causing the driver to lose control.

He ends up sideswiping a white Toyota Tundra that’s parked on the side of the road. That impact not only destroys part of that vehicle, it causes the Ford Super Duty to roll off the back of the tow truck, which just keeps on driving.

In the crash, a power pole was broken at its base, showing just how violent the hit was.

But there’s good reason the tow truck driver didn’t stop after the crash: the Ford Super Duty was stolen. He had just pulled it up onto the wrecker from the same neighborhood. Because the truck was hot, he didn’t dare stop and strap it down. That’s why he was driving like a maniac through the neighborhood, too.

It’s just one instance in an ongoing problem in the area with what are called bandit tow trucks. People use non-licensed trucks to steal vehicles, making it look like they’re a legitimate business. Thieves come up with all kinds of creative ways to take your stuff.
