Did Georgia Power contractors steal money from Fort Gordon barracks? Here's what we know

A video recently posted on Reddit makes a very serious accusation.

The poster claims they are from Fort Gordon in Augusta and writes in the caption that this video shows a Georgia Power contractor entering a room in the barracks without escort and stealing someone's money. They go on to claim that the contractor, after realizing he was being filmed, put it back and tried to cut the feed.

What is on the Reddit Fort Gordon video?

The video's timecode says it was filmed on the morning of Thursday, July 17. It shows a room that resembles one of the barracks, and you see a piece of U.S. Army clothing in the background. Two men dressed like utility workers enter, one exits the frame while the other stays in the bedroom area.

The other eats some food and looks around the room. He then sees something on a desk, nonchalantly picks it up and puts it in his pocket. The object he picks up strongly resembles cash, but we cannot 100% confirm it due to the video's resolution.

He then makes eye contact with the camera, stops, turns around and goes back to the desk. It's possible he's putting what he took back, but it's hard to tell with the camera's angle and it's not returned to the same place. He then walks over to the camera, grabs it, and moves it around so we can no longer see the room. That's where the video cuts out.

As of Friday, the video had more than 2,000 upvotes [likes] and more than 260 comments. It has also since been shared on other social media and news platforms.

Georgia Power responds to Fort Gordon Reddit video

Georgia Power took to Reddit to respond to the video, releasing a statement confirming the individuals shown were employed by a contractor working on Georgia Power's behalf as a project to upgrade lighting at Fort Gordon and were inspecting indoor lighting.

"While the individuals are not Georgia Power employees, we expect anyone working on our behalf on this project to follow base guidelines and act ethically and in compliance with all laws," the statement reads. "We’re in touch with the base and the contracting company, which has removed the two employees from the site. We will continue to work with the contracting company to determine the details of this incident and ensure it is handled appropriately. We take this very seriously and appreciate the soldiers involved bringing it to our attention."

Fort Gordon responds to Reddit video
