NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The start of school is just around the corner, and many people are starting their back-to-school shopping ahead of a big money-saving weekend in the state.

Many kindergarten students and their parents gathered at Midland Park Elementary School Wednesday to meet their teachers. They’re helping families prepare and alleviate some of the anxiety that comes with starting their K-12 journey.

“I remember as a mother myself, the excitement around kindergarten, the anxiety around kindergarten,” Charleston County School District Superintendent Anita Huggins said. “We’re hoping to alleviate some of that today with this open forum and through our countdown to kindergarten series this year.”

As many families pack their bags for the first day, this weekend might be the time to do it. Aug. 1-3 is South Carolina’s annual tax-free weekend. People can buy things like school supplies and technology without the 6% sales tax they’re used to.

“We’re excited to have our customers come in the weekend and save even more with us,” Walmart store manager Chenedria Watley said. “Back to school items like supplies, clothing. Apparel like socks, underwear, even shoes. And select electronic items like laptops and computer accessories.”

It’s a once-a-year deal that many don’t want to miss.

“I think it’s awesome,” shopper Brian Hartless said. “I’m going to probably take advantage of it this weekend.”

The first day of school for all Charleston County students is Aug. 12.
