This weekend, West Virginians can save a little money on back-to-school clothing and supplies as well as other items. The state’s annual tax holiday runs from Friday through Monday night.

Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced this year’s tax holiday during a news conference Wednesday at the Meadowbrook Mall in Bridgeport, West Virginia.

“The upcoming sales tax holiday period is a chance to put hard-earned dollars back into the pockets of West Virginians,” Morrisey said in a news release. “I hope everyone gets the chance to get out, support local businesses, and get ready for the upcoming school year.”

The tax holiday will cost the state about $3.4 million, according to a news release from the governor’s office.

Morrisey said the tax holiday should be just the beginning and that the state should do a lot more “as we’re getting our financial house in order.”

“We need to keep returning money back to the people,” he said in a video message posted to social media. He said during the news conference Wednesday the state’s income tax should be lower than all its surrounding states.

According to the state tax division, the following items are exempt from the state sales and use tax during the weekend:

  • Certain clothing with a purchase price of $125 or less

  • Certain laptop and tablet computers with a purchase price of $500 or less

  • Certain school instruction material with a purchase price of $20 or less

  • Certain school supplies with a purchase price of $50 or less

  • Certain sports equipment with a purchase price of $150 or less.

More information and a more detailed description of items eligible for the tax holiday is available online at the tax division’s website.

The tax holiday begins at 12 a.m. Friday and continues until 11:59 p.m. Monday.
