The Boring Company, yet another of Elon Musk’s companies, has been hired to dig car tunnels underneath Nashville. The State of Tennessee is looking for innovative ways to facilitate transportation and decided to give the revolutionary concept a whirl.

The Music City Loop, as it’s called, will be a high-speed, all-electric transit system that’s owned and operated by The Boring Company. While there will be multiple stops in the system, unlike a subway where the train stops at every one, people will be transported non-stop to their desired destination.
It all operates with Tesla vehicles driving through underground tubes. Those are installed underneath state-owned roads, avoiding conflict with private landowners.
“Tennessee continues to lead the way in finding creative solutions to longstanding challenges,” said Governor Bill Lee. “By leveraging the innovation of private companies like The Boring Company, we’re exploring possibilities we couldn’t achieve on our own as a state. This potential partnership represents the kind of forward-thinking, fiscally responsible approach that will define the future of transportation in Tennessee.
For the start of The Music City Loop, the plan is to install 10 miles of tubes connecting downtown Nashville, including the Convention Center, to the Nashville International Airport. Getting from one end to the other would take approximately 8 minutes.
That’s part of the appeal of this system. Unlike regular public transit like trains or busses, this is a truly rapid way of moving people around.
According to The Boring Company, the first portion of the initial loop in Nashville should be up and running in the spring of next year.
However, not everyone’s excited about this innovative project. As reported by CNBC, Democratic lawmakers in Tennessee and the mayor of Nashville have a lot of questions about the plan and process as their party has gone from viewing Musk as a friend to now a foe.
Reportedly, Republicans are eager to get The Music City Loop on the move.
The Boring Company has been building and underground loop system for the city of Las Vegas, Nevada as well. Perhaps more cities will join the list in the future.
