COLFAX, N.C. (WGHP) — Most people love to stop by their local farmer’s market to pick up some fresh fruits or vegetables. But they often find something that they weren’t expecting.
FOX 8’s Brad Jones says those great discoveries are just part of the business of agriculture that’s Made in North Carolina.
We visited the Piedmont Triad Farmers Market in Colfax for Watermelon Day, a great opportunity for people to sample some of the best melons around.
It’s also a chance to discover different types that won’t show up in a grocery store. Daniel Johnson is the manager of this sprawling market just off Interstate 40 and says it’s a vital link between North Carolina growers and customers who want the best food they can buy.
It’s also a chance for kids to learn more about the locally grown produce they enjoy by getting a snack and the opportunity to meet the Watermelon Queen, Elle Steinlage from Mooresville.
“The crown and the sash draw people in, but it also gets people excited about watermelon and excited about eating healthy and excited about agriculture,” Steinlage says.
The people who work to market North Carolina growers and their crops are really teachers. They feature different types of melons and let visitors know why things that are locally grown really are better. This farmers market alone has about 1.8 million visitors each year, and each one of those customers is spending money on food, plants and other products.
“We’re supporting our local economies”, Johnson told us, adding that “we’re supporting our friends, our families, our neighbors, and that of course makes us a stronger, more resilient community”.
Watermelon Day may be a time to taste and celebrate, but it’s also a chance to let customers know how they’re investing in the farm families who showcase their best at the market every week.
Stop by and visit the Piedmont Triad Farmers Market at 2914 Sandy Ridge Road in Colfax, NC. They’re open every day from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m.
