Mercedes recently did a victory lap to celebrate how you can’t escape the office anymore while going for a drive. That’s right, instead of being able to relax and unplug while traveling to work or going home, now you can use Microsoft Teams and other productivity software as you drive.

The fact the German automaker thinks this is a great idea tells us so very much about who’s making our cars these days. Automakers have been stuffing more and more tech into vehicles without thinking what it means or why anyone needs it, and we’re hitting new heights of ridiculousness.
If you buy the new Mercedes CLA, you can use the Meetings for Teams app to literally videoconference for work while you’re driving down the road.
There’s already a camera pointed at the driver in newer Mercedes, a fact which is disconcerting for other reasons. But the company decided to put that surveillance tool to work for video calls. Now your boss can berate you while you’re commuting, instead of you enjoying some solitude while navigating thick traffic.
Plus, you can scroll through your calendar and contacts instead of keeping both hands on the steering wheel and your eyes on the road.
As if this isn’t enough foolishness, Merecedes is working on getting Microsoft 365 Copilot running in new cars. Why anyone needs to use that while driving, let alone when they’re on their computer, is a mystery to us.
Drivers are distracted enough these days. Adding video conferencing and other work tasks to a person’s duties while they’re behind the wheel isn’t humorous, it’s dangerous. You can’t tell us there’s zero distraction going on when someone’s using these apps.
