
Summer is almost over, and the back-to-school season is here.
Walmart and Target stocked their shelves with notebooks and pencils, and schools across Alabama have sent reminder emails to parents and students.
As the school year approaches, parents are encouraged to check their local school websites for supply lists, bell schedules and upcoming open house events.
When do classes start in Alabama? Here's what to know.
Montgomery
In Montgomery, students return to class on August 5. Teachers, however, returned a few days earlier, on July 30, to prepare for the school year. After a couple of weeks of settling in, students will get a day off for the Labor Day holiday.

Tuscaloosa
Tuscaloosa City and County students will head back to class on August 7. Teachers return earlier for professional development days on August 1, 4, 5 and 6. The first long weekend of the school year for Tuscaloosa students will arrive with Labor Day in early September.

Gadsden
Gadsden City students will start classes on August 7, with teachers having in-service days on August 4, 5, and 6.

Mobile
Mobile County Public School students get a few extra days of summer as school starts on August 11. Teachers return the week before for professional development and classroom preparation. With one of the latest start dates in the state, Mobile families have a little more time for last-minute vacations or back-to-school shopping.
Birmingham
Birmingham students will also have a start date of August 7, with teachers having their development days on August 4, 5 and 6.

Huntsville
Huntsville students headed back to class on August 4, but they get an early break soon after. Schools will dismiss early on August 29, marking the start of the Labor Day holiday weekend.
