John Cena’s Peacemaker has already fought his fair share of DC Universe monsters, such as Starro and the Butterflies. In Season 2 of his HBO Max show, he’s going to face arguably the scariest creature yet.
What do we know about Peacemaker Season 2?
The image, which can be viewed below, shows DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn snapping a close-up photo of a black rubber-suited monster with four glowing red eyes, long fingernails, and an overall design that looks reminiscent of the Xenomorph from the Alien franchise. The monster is shown holding a “little rat-like buddy,” which is devoid of fur. At the time of writing, it is unclear what sort of role this monster will play in Peacemaker Season 2.
The second season of Peacemaker arrives three years after the first, which was part of the now-concluded DC Extended Universe. Despite Peacemaker jumping from the DCEU to the DCU, the events of Season 1 will still largely be considered canon. As for what has been retconned out of existence, Gunn is set to explain exactly what has changed between universes through the recently launched Peacemaker Podcast.
“One of the things that people are most confused by, as Peter Safran and I took over DC is, what is part of the DCU? This is the world that Superman lives in. This is the world that the Creature Commandos lives in. Up until this point, those are the only two things that are fully 100% canon,” Gunn explained in the podcast’s first episode.
However, events from the DCEU could become canon in the DCU by being mentioned or referenced by characters, with Gunn adding, “And the same thing is going to be true about Peacemaker Season 2. It’s fully 100% canon in the DC, but we did have to go back and change a few things from Season 1.”
The events of Gunn’s 2021 DCEU movie, The Suicide Squad, will also be made canon in the DCU through an upcoming storyline in Peacemaker Season 2 involving Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. The character will be out for justice, or perhaps looking for revenge, against Peacemaker, who killed his son, Rick Flag. Jr, in the superhero movie.
Other returning DCEU/DCU stars in Peacemaker Season 2 include Isabel Merced (Hawkgirl), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner), Sean Gunn (Maxwell Lord), Freddie Stroma (Vigilante), Danielle Brooks (Leota Adebayo), Steve Agee (John Economos), Jennifer Holland (Emilia Harcourt), and Nhut Le (Judomaster), among others.
Peacemaker Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on August 21, 2025.
