It's One Of Just 85 Built For The U.S.

There are few better examples of automotive fan service than the 2025 Audi RS6 Avant GT. This limited-edition version of the only Audi performance wagon currently sold in the United States features performance upgrades and a modern rendition of the livery worn by the Audi 90 Quattro IMSA GTO race cars.

The only downside is that Audi allocated just 85 cars for the U.S., out of a global production run of 660 units. But one of those cars has turned up for sale on Bring a Trailer, and with just a few hours left of the auction, the high bid was less than the original MSRP. Audi priced the GT at $200,195 (including the $1,295 destination charge), but at press time bidding for this car stood at $142,000.

Audi has long distinguished itself from rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz by emphasizing performance wagons instead of sedans, a tradition that goes back to the Porsche-engineered Audi RS2 Avant of 1994. But Americans' aversion to wagons meant RS Avant models generally stayed on the other side of the Atlantic.

The RS6 Avant finally made its way to the U.S. with the C8 generation, arriving as a 2021 model. Its twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 (with a mild-hybrid system) initially produced 591 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, but for the 2024 model year, Audi introduced an RS6 Avant Performance version with 621 hp and 627 lb-ft.

In addition to increasing output, Audi removed 17 pounds of sound-deadening material and introduced optional lightweight 22-inch wheels that automaker claimed reduced unsprung mass by approximately 11 pounds at each corners. The RS6 Avant Performance bettered the original version's zero to 60 mph time by 0.3 second, at 3.6 seconds, while the top speed was electronically limited to 155 mph, with an option to have that raised to 190 mph.

The RS6 Avant GT received additional upgrades over the Performance model, including adjustable-coil over suspension, a retuned rear differential designed to make the GT a bit more tail-happy, and Continental SportContact 7 tires. Output was unchanged, but Audi said the GT was 0.1 second quicker than the Performance from zero to 60 mph. The 190-mph top speed remained as well.

Even those numbers are easily overshadowed by the GT's red, white, and black livery. The cars that have worn those colors have filled warehouses with trophies, but this livery is a specific tribute to the Audi 90 Quattro sedans that humbled sports cars in the IMSA GTO class in the late 1980s. Audi had decamped to IMSA after rule changes effectively booted it from the SCCA Trans Am series it had previously dominated. It went on to do the same in IMSA, before switching to the German DTM series with its V8 sedan (and winning there as well).

Based on a concept car built by Audi apprentices, the GT also wears 22-inch "Avus" wheels, a unique "pass-through" rear spoiler and body kit, and carbon-fiber front fenders and hood. It's also the first production Audi RS6 Avant without roof rails, the deletion of which, along with the carbon-fiber bits, help save about 88 pounds, which is why the GT is a bit quicker than the RS6 Avant Performance.

Instant Collectible

Between its limited production run, the general rarity of Audi performance wagons in the U.S., and its racing-tribute livery, the RS6 Avant GT was always likely to become an instant collectible. But that's doubly true because it's unclear when we'll see anything else like it in Audi showrooms.

Audi has already confirmed that the electric A6 e-tron Avant won't be company to the U.S., shutting the door on any potential future RS version of that model. And while a redesigned gasoline A6 sedan is scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. later this year, there's no word yet on a new Avant version. But rumors has it that, in whatever markets it does end up being sold in, the next RS6 Avant will keep its V8.
