More than 60 years after the 36th and final Ferrari 250 GTO was built, the front-engined homologation specials are still the most desirable cars to ever wear the Prancing Horse. That makes GTOs the most expensive Ferraris ever sold, so the occasional auctioning of one is always big news. The latest to hit the block, chassis number 3729 GT, will be no different.

Like all GTOs, 3729 GT has a rich history. It was the only GTO to be sold new in white, the color it ran in nine international races from 1962 to 1964. The car won its class at Brands Hatch in 1963 with driver and future owner Jack Sears, but its most notable race may have been an entry in the 1962 RAC Tourist Trophy at Goodwood. Indianapolis 500, 24 Hours of Le Mans, and Formula 1 champion Graham Hill finished second in 3729 GT at that event.

After racing, the GTO gained some unique notoriety as the specific car featured in Gran Turismo 6; a Ferrari 250 GTO based on 3729 GT is also featured in Gran Turismo Sport and Gran Turismo 7, but it no longer features this car's specific chassis code as part of its model name.

The last 250 GTO to go to auction sold for over $51 million in November of 2023. That car, which was the only one of 36 cars originally equipped with a larger 4.0-liter V-12 from the factory, was the first to see an auction block since 2018. Chassis number 3729 GT, which Mecum is calling the "Blanco Speciale," will reach the market after just two years without a GTO in a major public sale. It will be displayed at Mecum's Monterey auction this month before being sold at the house's Kissimmee event in January.
