HAMPTON — A 2-year-old boy died from injuries sustained in a vehicle crash last week on Interstate 64 westbound near the Interstate 664 interchange in a work zone.

Virginia State Police said at 8:35 p.m. on July 30 a Chevrolet Cruze, whose driver was later charged with following too closely, struck the rear of a Toyota Sienna, causing the Sienna to spin out and strike a Honda Accord.

The Sienna ran off of the road’s left side and struck a jersey wall barrier, the Cruze ran off the road’s right side and struck a guard rail and the Accord remained in the travel lanes.

The boy, who state police said was properly restrained, was taken to a hospital but died from his injuries. A 36-year-old woman in the Sienna suffered serious injuries and was also sent to a hospital. The driver of the Sienna sustained minor injuries.

Neither the driver of the Accord nor the Cruze were injured.

Authorities said as of Tuesday the crash was still under investigation.

No additional details were immediately available.
