Live updates: Trump envoy meets with Putin, as sanctions deadline looms

White House peace envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday at the Kremlin, just two days ahead of a deadline set by President Trump that calls for either a peace agreement in Ukraine or punitive action against Russia.

Putin, who has lost favor in recent weeks with Trump, faces tough tariffs on nations that buy Russian oil, along with other sanctions. Witkoff has made five trips to Moscow since January, securing prisoner exchanges, while a ceasefire has remained elusive.

Russia this summer has gained momentum in its war for Ukraine. After a rocky start with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the White House now will allow European allies to buy American weapons for use in Ukraine to aid in the fight.

Trump last week said he was moving two “nuclear” submarines closer to Russia in response to threatening rhetoric from a top Kremlin official. On Sunday, he confirmed the vessels were now “in the region.”

In Washington, Trump has only one event on his schedule Wednesday, a 4:30 p.m. “announcement.”
