Fort Stewart went into lockdown on Wednesday morning after reporting an active shooter situation and “casualties” at the Army base in eastern Georgia.

“The installation was locked down at 11:04 a.m. and law enforcement is on the scene at the time,” the base said in a statement on social media shortly before noon local time. “Casualties have been reported and the situation is ongoing.”

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said his office is in close contact with law enforcement on the ground.

“We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same,” he wrote in a post on social media.

Fort Stewart is located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah and is home to thousands of soldiers assigned to the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division, according to The Associated Press.
