An exceptionally restored and tastefully modified 1955 Porsche 356 Pre-A Speedster will cross the auction block at Mecum’s Monterey sale on Saturday, August 16, offering collectors a unique blend of period-correct authenticity and outlaw-style performance.

Finished in Porsche’s Metallic Gray over red leather, this early 356 Speedster underwent a meticulous rotisserie restoration by Classic Showcase of Oceanside, California. Though converted into an outlaw-style configuration, it retains many original components—including the hood, doors, trunk lid, top bow, gauges, and seats—making it possible to return the car to factory specification.

Power comes from a professionally built 1720cc flat-four sourced from a Porsche 912, paired with dual Weber downdraft carburetors and a sport exhaust system. Mechanical upgrades include a Porsche 741 transaxle tailored for rally use, front disc brakes, and a 12-volt electrical conversion for enhanced reliability.

Rolling on period-correct German Rudge knock-off wheels wrapped in Vredestein Sprint Classic tires, the car’s stance and drivability match its competition-inspired looks. The red leather cabin features original-style bucket seats, a banjo steering wheel, German-sourced carpet, a cloth top, removable side windows, and a color-matched tonneau cover.

Presented in concours condition, this Pre-A Speedster has been displayed at prestigious events such as the Quail Lodge and La Jolla Concours d’Elegance. The sale includes a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, photo documentation of the restoration on a flash drive, a spare tire, jack, and supporting documentation.

With limited test miles since completion, this Speedster is a compelling opportunity for collectors seeking a high-quality example that merges factory-correct bones with rally-ready upgrades—and the potential for either spirited road use or return to showroom-stock condition. See it here.
