Shockingly Meticulous: Larry Ellison’s McLaren F1 Set To Auction

Larry Ellison’s McLaren F1 will cross the auction block this month in Monterey and it might set a record for value. It’s really no wonder, considering the original owner’s fame, the exclusive nature even among other F1s, and the shockingly meticulous attention to detail and care paid by the supercar’s three owners.

A one-of-one Dodge Viper GTC ACR Extreme is also crossing the block in Monterey.

It also doesn’t hurt that the McLaren F1, chassis No. 062, has been driven less than 6,500 miles. Ordered new from the factory by Ellison, it was one of only seven which were imported to the US brand new. In other words, even among F1s, it’s in an elite class.

Adding further to the appeal of an already abundantly desirable ride are the non-factory upgrades installed by McLaren Special Operations. These include an aluminum fuel tank, better air conditioning, superior radiator, and a sports exhaust system. We would consider all of these to be tasteful if not necessary modifications.

What’s even more interesting is the fact that even though this McLaren was required to pass federal safety and emissions standards at the time, it’s believed only the first F1 imported to the US actually went through that process. In other words, this one bears none of the modifications the feds would’ve required, adding further to its odd appeal.

For many enthusiasts, the McLaren F1 is a unicorn, a thing they desire but is completely out of their reach. Some even fell in love with cars because of this beautiful machine, which jumpstarted McLaren’s road-going vehicle production once more.

Thanks to the heavy application of Formula One technology from the time, the F1 was the fastest production car at the time. It’s still the fastest naturally-aspirated production car.

The current record for a McLaren F1 sale is $20.5 million, set at Pebble Beach in 2021. While that supercar had a mere 242 miles on the odometer, RM Sotheby’s which is auctioning off this example at its Monterey event, estimates it will sell for over $23 million.
