As GM brings the Chevy Bolt back just as demand for EVs is cratering, it seems the batteries will be coming from China. That’s right, once again GM makes an unbelievably stupid move, lagging behind the market, as well as failing to read the room. But don’t worry, the automaker has plenty of excuses.
Car thieves are targeting the Camaro with a vengeance.
According to an explosive report from The Wall Street Journal, GM is sourcing the batteries for its weird little electric car from Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd., what you probably know as CATL.
Ford and many others have worked with CATL, which has been an industry leader in battery tech for EVs. GM has predictably used that as an excuse at a time when people are growing tired of such arrangements.
But GM says it will only be sourcing batteries from CATL for a little while until its battery production facility it’s building here in the US is finally up and running. That should be within two years.
In the meantime, we have so many questions. The main one is why GM thinks bringing the Bolt back after it was canceled back when EVs were more popular is a good idea. Considering it’s supposed to be a budget-friendly electric car, paying tariffs on the batteries seems like it will eat away at profit margins, if there are any with the thing.
But many media outlets are using this as a sob story to highlight how horrible President Trump is for imposing tariffs on China. We’d love to see them then do a piece on all the restrictions the Chinese Communist Party slaps on foreign automakers wanting to sell cars, because our tariffs are nothing in comparison.
Perhaps GM thinks the Bolt will appeal to all the people who are apparently selling their Teslas to own Elon or something?
