Flash flooding is once again a concern for Kansas City as the threat of heavy rain and storms mix with hot temperatures this weekend.

Multiple rounds of slow-moving storms Saturday night through Sunday night could produce around 3 or more inches of rain in some areas, according to the National Weather Service. Rainfall totals are expected to vary across the region, though.

Damaging winds are possible in storms that develop Saturday night. Severe weather chances are low and isolated mostly north of Missouri 36 Highway, meteorologists said in a Saturday morning forecast discussion.

“Storms may produce isolated damaging wind gusts today and tonight,” the weather service said in a Facebook post. “However, the higher threat is of flash flooding with storms developing tonight to our north and west and then moving into the region. “

In areas with little to no cloud cover, people should prepare for another scorcher, the weather service said. Severe heat and humidity is expected and a heat advisory is in effect south of Interstate 70 through Saturday evening.

Flash flood watch

Multiple weather advisories are in effect for this weekend’s weather.

A flood watch is in effect from 1 a.m. Sunday through 7 a.m. Monday. And a hazardous weather outlook warns people of severe heat Saturday, when heat index values could climb to around 103 degrees.

The high temperature Saturday is near 94 degrees throughout a mostly sunny day. Storms are expected to develop in the afternoon. Overnight Saturday, showers and thunderstorms are likely after 4 a.m. The overnight low is expected to be near 75 degrees, according to the weather service.

Sunday will be partly sunny with a high near 91 degrees, the forecast shows. Showers are possible in the early morning, then again in the afternoon when a thunderstorm is possible. Heat index values Sunday could be near 95 degrees.

Sunday night, there is another chance for rounds of thunderstorms stretching into around 4 a.m. Monday. Sunday night’s low will be near 71 degrees, according to the weather service.

Monday, the Kansas City area will get a break from the heat. The high is forecast near 83 degrees. Rain is still possible Monday, with rainfall totals predicted to be between a quarter and a half inch.
