Construction leads to congestion throughout Palm Beach, officials say

Construction has led to clogged roads in Palm Beach as crews worked on several projects.

The town sent a trio of alerts on Aug. 11 to caution drivers to expect backups in two spots on the North End and one stretch just north of President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club.

An alert in the morning warned drivers of anticipated congestion around South Ocean Boulevard between Via Vizcaya and Kings Road because of construction.

The two areas affected in the North End are North County Road between Tangier Avenue and Plantation Road, and in the 600 and 700 blocks of North Lake Way, the town said in back-to-back alerts.

The congestion on South Ocean Boulevard was related to the Florida Department of Transportation's project on State Road A1A between Emerald Beach Way, just south of Mar-a-Lago and the Southern Boulevard traffic circle, and Royal Palm Way. A1A through that area goes from Southern Boulevard north to South County Road, then north along South County Road to Royal Palm Way. FDOT crews will repave the road, update lighting and traffic signals, and make sidewalk improvements.

The town said in a notice to residents last week that FDOT crews would start paving on Aug. 11 just north of Southern Boulevard. That work will continue north to the intersection with South County Road through August, the town said.

Palm Beach officials urged motorists to use other routes to avoid these spots.

Which road projects are happening in Palm Beach?

There are several road projects happening in Palm Beach through Aug. 15, according to a town notice:

  • One lane of North Lake Way will be closed near 1575 N. Lake Way for concrete pouring on Aug. 12.

  • The southbound lane of North County Road between El Mirasol and Miraflores Drive will be closed through Sept. 1 as crews work on drainage improvements. Southbound traffic will detour via Crescent Drive between Crescent Drive and Wells Road, and there will be some lane closures.

  • East-west roads between and including Country Club Drive and Kawama Lane will be milled and resurfaced, and traffic will be detoured while crews work on each road. Access to homes will be maintained and only local traffic will be allowed.

There are also two Florida Department of Transportation projects happening on State Road A1A, or South Ocean Boulevard, in Palm Beach.

The southern project is on A1A between Lake Avenue and Ibis Way, with work that includes repaving. One lane may close between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. weekdays.
